Social Responsibility
Social Responsibility
Under Amlib’s Mineral Development Agreements there are a number of provisions regarding health and safety, education, infrastructure and the environment in the event of a production commencement date. This is taken very seriously and Amlib is already demonstrating its commitment above and beyond the requirements of its agreement in the following ways:
Amlib's operations have for some time made a valuable contribution to the local communities in which we operate whether through the employment opportunities we provide or the maintenance of roads and bridges into these for access to these villages.
In late 2009 a dedicated department was established for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities that liaises with local communities and enhance the impact of our CSR activities. CSR function is represented at Executive Committee meetings by Carney Johnson and has a separate budget to ensure delivery of programmes. Some the projects undertaken during 2010 are highlighted below.
Amlib contributed an article about its CSR activities in Liberia to the first edition of Embassy Review in April 2012. Please see page 13 of the newsletter for details of our CSR and community projects.
Amlib also maintains a good relationship with the local village people.
Education
Primary schools were constructed during 2010 in Dean Town and Saye-Weh Town on the Kokoya licence area, complete with furniture and learning materials. Each school also has an adjacent toilet block and water well for the childrens' use. Opening ceremonies took place in January 2011 with attendance by deputy ministers from Liberia's Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy.
Amlib United Minerals has sponsored its Liberian General Manager, Roosevelt Forh (a Liberian national), to study full time in the UK for a Masters’ degree in Finance. Mr Forh will be returning to Amlib United Mineral’s on a full time basis in July 2012 as Vice President Special Projects.
Environmental
Amlib's management is committed to minimising the impact of our operations on the environment. Scott Wilson have been engaged as Environmental Consultants to the company.
Pits and trenches are clearly marked once completed and are back-filled as soon as practical once all necessary geological information has been extracted.
Amlib's drilling activities are carefully planned to achieve access with the minimum disturbance to the environment. Water used to cool the drill bit is also recirculated and drilling lubricants are responsibly managed.
Attached is a copy of our Environmental Permit issued March 2012.

Amlib has been instrumental in the repair of bridges and roads, in particular with the repair of an important bridge at Saye Town in order to let vehicles travel across the water.
Bridge repair at Saye Town
One of the many projects which Amlib has been heavily involved in was the repair of a bridge in Saye Town. Village people are now able to cross the bridge with vehicles safely.
